Crystallization in single- and multicomponent neutron star crusts

چکیده
We use molecular dynamics simulations to study the formation and stability of single- multicomponent lattices in outer crust neutron stars. Including an improved treatment for Gaussian charge distributions ions, we obtain expressions potential forces arising from electron screened Coulomb interactions using efficient Ewald sum procedure. Our findings show that. baryon densities crust, a pointlike ion cannot fully describe crystallization behavior. In our work, usual parameter, ${\mathrm{\ensuremath{\Gamma}}}_{C}$, along with screening parameter polarizable background, $\ensuremath{\kappa}$, are complemented additional $\ensuremath{\eta}$, providing information on finite size ions. approach find that including beyond-pointlike approaches plasmas under Thomas-Fermi approximation has strong impact calculated lattice energetic stability, decreasing energies per up $\ensuremath{\approx}40%$ respect interaction and, as consequence, melting point is displaced lower temperatures.

Neutron-phonon Interaction in Neutron Star Crusts
The phonon spectrum of Coulomb lattice in neutron star crusts above the neutron drip density is affected by the interaction with the ambient neutron Fermi-liquid. For the values of the neutron-phonon coupling constant in the range 0.1 ≤ λ ≤ 1 an appreciable renormalization of the phonon spectrum occurs which can lead to a lattice instability manifested in an exponential growth of the density fl...
متن کاملPhysics of Neutron Star Crusts
The physics of neutron star crusts is vast, involving many different research fields, from nuclear and condensed matter physics to general relativity. This review summarizes the progress, which has been achieved over the last few years, in modeling neutron star crusts, both at the microscopic and macroscopic levels. The confrontation of these theoretical models with observations is also briefly...
متن کاملTowards a metallurgy of neutron star crusts.
In the standard picture of the crust of a neutron star, matter there is simple: a body-centered-cubic lattice of nuclei immersed in an essentially uniform electron gas. We show that, at densities above that for neutron drip (∼ 4 × 1 0(11) g cm(-3) or roughly one-thousandth of nuclear matter density), the interstitial neutrons give rise to an attractive interaction between nuclei that renders t...

We have investigated the crustal properties of neutron stars without fallback accretion. We have calculated the chemical evolution of the neutron star crust in three different cases (a modified Urca process without the thermal influence of a crust, a thick crust, and a direct Urca process with a thin crust) in order to determine the detailed composition of the envelope and atmosphere as the nuc...
متن کاملResonant shattering of neutron star crusts.
The resonant excitation of neutron star (NS) modes by tides is investigated as a source of short gamma-ray burst (SGRB) precursors. We find that the driving of a crust-core interface mode can lead to shattering of the NS crust, liberating ∼10{46}-10{47} erg of energy seconds before the merger of a NS-NS or NS-black-hole binary. Such properties are consistent with Swift/BAT detections of SGRB p...
